What is Percentage Calculator?

The Toolnest Percentage Calculator answers one of the most common maths questions in daily life: what is a given percentage of an amount? Type the amount, type the percentage, and it returns the exact portion. It is handy for working out GST on a bill, a salesperson's commission, a tip, a hike in salary or the marks needed out of a total.

Students, shopkeepers, accountants and anyone comparing offers can use it without signing up. The calculation follows the standard rule of multiplying the amount by the percentage and dividing by 100, and it accepts decimal percentages such as 12.5%, negative percentages for reductions, and values above 100%. Everything is worked out locally in your browser, so the numbers you enter never leave your device.

How to use Percentage Calculator

  1. Enter the base number in the Amount field, for example 2500. You can type 2500, 2,500 or ₹2,500: commas and the ₹ sign are ignored.
  2. Enter the rate in the Percentage (%) field, for example 18. Decimals like 12.5 are fine.
  3. Press Calculate to see the portion that the percentage represents.
  4. Use Copy result to paste the answer into a bill, spreadsheet or message.
  5. Press Reset to clear the form and start a new calculation.

Percentage Calculator examples

1

18% GST on a bill

Input: Amount 2500, Percentage 18

Result: 450

18% GST on a ₹2,500 item adds ₹450.

2

Share of a monthly budget

Input: Amount 45000, Percentage 12.5

Result: 5,625

A 12.5% share of ₹45,000 is ₹5,625.

3

Negative percentage for a reduction

Input: Amount 800, Percentage -20

Result: -160

A 20% reduction on 800 removes 160.

Important notes before you rely on the result

  • Enter plain numbers; commas, spaces and currency signs are removed automatically, so 1,50,000 and 150000 give the same answer.
  • Results are rounded for display (up to 4 decimal places) but calculated at full precision, so a hand calculation with rounded steps can differ in the last digit.
  • Use the same unit for every input. Mixing rupees and thousands of rupees, or marks out of 50 and out of 100, gives a wrong answer.

Percentage Calculator: frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 15% of 200 is 200 × 15 ÷ 100 = 30. This calculator does exactly that: put 200 in Amount and 15 in Percentage (%), press Calculate, and it shows 30. It saves you from slipping a decimal point when the numbers get larger or include decimals.

Can a percentage be more than 100?

Yes. A percentage above 100 simply means more than the whole amount. For instance, 150% of 400 is 600, which is one and a half times the original. The calculator accepts any such value, so you can use it for markups, growth targets or comparisons where the result is larger than the starting figure.

Does this tool tell me what percent one number is of another?

No. This calculator finds a percentage of an amount, such as 18% of 2500. If you need to know what share 30 is of 120, or how much a value rose or fell in percentage terms, use a dedicated 'percentage of' or percentage change calculator instead. Keeping each tool focused on one question keeps the inputs simple.

Can I type numbers with commas, like 1,000?

Yes. Commas, spaces and a leading ₹ sign are removed before calculating, so 1,000, 1 000 and ₹1,000 are all read as 1000. Decimals with a dot, like 12.5, and a leading minus sign are accepted too. If something cannot be read as a number, the calculator names the field to fix. The answer is shown with Indian digit grouping, such as 1,12,500, and up to 4 decimal places.

How do I add GST or a tip to an amount with this?

Find the percentage portion first, then add it yourself. For 18% GST on ₹2,500 the calculator returns 450, so the total is ₹2,950. The same works for a tip or service charge. If you need the price before GST was added, use a reverse percentage calculator, because subtracting 18% from the total does not give the original price.
