Reverse GST Calculator
Remove GST from an inclusive price. Enter the total and the GST rate to find the price before tax, the GST included in it and its CGST and SGST split.
What is the Reverse GST Calculator?
A reverse GST calculator works backwards from a price that already includes tax. Enter the tax-inclusive total and the GST rate, and it separates the amount into the original price before tax and the GST included in it, with that tax also split equally into CGST and SGST. This is useful when a restaurant bill, an MRP or a client payment is quoted as all-inclusive and you need the net value for your books or a tax invoice.
Accountants, shopkeepers, freelancers and online sellers use it to back-calculate taxable value, while buyers use it to see how much of what they paid went to tax. It works with the current 5%, 18% and 40% GST rates or any flat rate you enter. The tool uses the correct division method rather than simply taking a percentage of the total, which is a very common mistake.
How to use the Reverse GST Calculator
- Enter the final amount that already includes tax in the Tax-inclusive total field, for example 1180.
- Type the rate that was applied in Included tax rate (%), such as 18.
- Press Calculate to see the Before tax amount, with the Included tax and its CGST and SGST split listed below it.
- For an intra-state sale use the CGST and SGST figures; for an inter-state sale treat the whole Included tax as IGST.
- Copy the figures for your records, or press Reset to try another amount.
Features
- Splits an inclusive price into net amount, tax and a CGST and SGST split
- Uses the correct formula: total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
- Supports any flat rate, including all common GST slabs
- Accepts decimal totals and rates
- Amounts shown with 2 decimals and Indian digit grouping, plus copy, reset and clear error messages

- No sign-up; calculations stay in your browser
Formula used
Before tax = total/(1+rate/100); included tax = total−before tax.
Examples
Remove 18% GST from ₹1,180
Input: Tax-inclusive total 1180, Included tax rate 18%
Result: Before tax: 1,000.00 Included tax: 180.00 CGST: 90.00 and SGST: 90.00 (intra-state split) The net price is ₹1,000 and GST is ₹180.
Restaurant bill with 5% GST
Input: Tax-inclusive total 525, Included tax rate 5%
Result: Before tax: 500.00 Included tax: 25.00 CGST: 12.50 and SGST: 12.50 (intra-state split) The food value is ₹500 and ₹25 is GST.
Odd total with 18% GST
Input: Tax-inclusive total 999, Included tax rate 18%
Result: Before tax: 846.61 Included tax: 152.39 CGST: 76.19 and SGST: 76.19 (intra-state split) About ₹846.61 is the base price and ₹152.39 is GST. Each CGST and SGST half is rounded separately, so together they show ₹152.38.

Reverse GST Calculator: frequently asked questions
How do I remove GST from a total amount?
Divide the inclusive total by 1 plus the GST rate as a decimal. For 18% GST, divide by 1.18; for 5%, by 1.05; for 40%, by 1.40. The answer is the price before tax, and the difference between the total and that figure is the GST. For ₹1,180 at 18%, the base price is ₹1,000 and the GST is ₹180, which is ₹90 CGST plus ₹90 SGST.
Why can't I just take 18% of the inclusive price?
Because the 18% was charged on the smaller, pre-tax price, not on the total. Taking 18% of ₹1,180 gives ₹212.40, which overstates the real tax of ₹180. The correct share of GST inside an 18% inclusive price is 18 ÷ 118, or about 15.25% of the total. The calculator applies the right formula automatically.
Is MRP in India inclusive of GST?
Generally, yes. The maximum retail price printed on packaged goods in India is meant to include all taxes, so you can enter the MRP here with the applicable rate to estimate the tax inside it. The rate you enter must be the one actually charged on that product, which this tool cannot determine for you. Check the invoice or the official GST schedule.
Can I use this for VAT-inclusive prices?
Yes. The method is the same for any flat-rate tax charged on a net price, so a VAT-inclusive price with 20% VAT can be split by entering 20 as the rate. It does not handle compound taxes, multiple taxes stacked on each other, or special schemes, so confirm those cases with a tax professional.
How are the results rounded?
Each figure is shown to 2 decimal places with Indian digit grouping. Round totals like ₹1,180 at 18% come out clean, while ₹999 at 18% shows Before tax: 846.61 and Included tax: 152.39. The CGST and SGST halves are rounded separately, so they can differ from the included tax by a paisa. Follow the rounding rule your invoicing system uses for filed invoices.
