What is the URL Slug Generator?

A clean slug makes a URL easier to read, share and remember. This URL Slug Generator takes a heading or phrase and turns it into a lowercase, hyphen-separated slug ready for a WordPress post, product page or category. Punctuation and spaces become single hyphens, accents are stripped from Latin letters, and stray hyphens at either end are removed.

Letters and numbers from any script are kept intact, so Marathi and Hindi titles in Devanagari keep their vowel signs and conjuncts: पैठण News Update becomes पैठण-news-update. Only accents on Latin letters are removed, so Café becomes cafe. The details show how many characters the slug has. Paste a single title or load a text file; the slug is created instantly in your browser.

URL Slug Generator: frequently asked questions

What does the slug generator remove?

It removes everything that is not a letter or a number. Spaces, punctuation, symbols, underscores and emoji are replaced, and each run of them becomes a single hyphen. Hyphens at the start and end are then trimmed. Accent marks are stripped from Latin letters, and the result is lowercased, so the output contains only letters, digits and hyphens. If the input has no letters or numbers at all, the tool asks you to enter some instead of returning an empty slug.

Does it remove stop words like a, the and of?

No. Every word in your title is kept, so How to Start a Blog becomes how-to-start-a-blog. If you prefer shorter slugs, delete the small words yourself after generating it. Shorter slugs are tidier, but keeping the words is never harmful, and many sites leave them in for readability.

Can I use it for Hindi or Marathi titles?

Yes. Devanagari letters, vowel signs and digits are kept exactly as typed, and only accents on Latin letters are removed. For example, पैठण News Update becomes पैठण-news-update. English words in a mixed title are lowercased as usual. Check that your CMS accepts non-Latin slugs; WordPress does, although such URLs are percent-encoded when copied and can look long when shared.

Does it transliterate non-Latin text to English letters?

No. Letters from scripts such as Devanagari, Greek, Cyrillic or Chinese stay in their original script; the tool does not convert them to a Latin spelling. Browsers display these characters normally, but they are percent-encoded when the URL is copied or sent, which can make shared links look long. If you prefer a Roman-letter slug, type the title in English or Roman spelling before generating it.

Is the slug length limited?

The tool does not shorten slugs, so a long headline produces a long slug. Your CMS may apply its own limit; WordPress, for example, allows long slugs but they look cluttered in search results and social shares. Aim for a few meaningful keywords. Trim the result before pasting it into your permalink field if it runs long.
