What is the Percentage Calculator?

The Toolnest Percentage Calculator answers one of the most common maths questions in daily life: what is a given percentage of an amount? Type the amount, type the percentage, and it returns the exact portion. It is handy for working out GST on a bill, a salesperson's commission, a tip, a hike in salary or the marks needed out of a total.

Students, shopkeepers, accountants and anyone comparing offers can use it without signing up. The calculation follows the standard rule of multiplying the amount by the percentage and dividing by 100, and it accepts decimal percentages such as 12.5%, negative percentages for reductions, and values above 100%. Everything is worked out locally in your browser, so the numbers you enter never leave your device.

How to use the Percentage Calculator

  1. Enter the base number in the Amount field, for example 2500. Use plain digits without ₹ signs or commas.
  2. Enter the rate in the Percentage (%) field, for example 18. Decimals like 12.5 are fine.
  3. Press Calculate to see the portion that the percentage represents.
  4. Use Copy result to paste the answer into a bill, spreadsheet or message.

Percentage Calculator: frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 15% of 200 is 200 × 15 ÷ 100 = 30. This calculator does exactly that: put 200 in Amount and 15 in Percentage (%), press Calculate, and it shows 30. It saves you from slipping a decimal point when the numbers get larger or include decimals.

Can a percentage be more than 100?

Yes. A percentage above 100 simply means more than the whole amount. For instance, 150% of 400 is 600, which is one and a half times the original. The calculator accepts any such value, so you can use it for markups, growth targets or comparisons where the result is larger than the starting figure.

Does this tool tell me what percent one number is of another?

No. This calculator finds a percentage of an amount, such as 18% of 2500. If you need to know what share 30 is of 120, or how much a value rose or fell in percentage terms, use a dedicated 'percentage of' or percentage change calculator instead. Keeping each tool focused on one question keeps the inputs simple.

Why does it show an error when I type 1,000?

The fields accept plain numbers only, so thousand separators, spaces inside the number and currency symbols such as ₹ are rejected with a message like 'Amount must be a plain number, without commas or currency symbols.' Type 1000 instead of 1,000. Decimals with a dot, like 12.5, and a leading minus sign are accepted. The answer itself is shown with Indian digit grouping, such as 1,12,500, and up to 4 decimal places.

How do I add GST or a tip to an amount with this?

Find the percentage portion first, then add it yourself. For 18% GST on ₹2,500 the calculator returns 450, so the total is ₹2,950. The same works for a tip or service charge. If you need the price before GST was added, use a reverse percentage calculator, because subtracting 18% from the total does not give the original price.
