What is the Land Area Converter?

Land records, sale deeds and builder brochures rarely use the same unit. A 7/12 extract in Maharashtra may list gunthas and acres, a layout plan shows square feet, and a government notice quotes hectares. This land area converter lets you move between seven common survey units in one step: square metres, square feet, square yards, acres, hectares, cents and gunthas, so you can compare plots on equal terms.

Every unit uses a fixed, published definition. One acre is 43,560 square feet, one guntha is one fortieth of an acre (1,089 sq ft) and one cent is one hundredth of an acre. Units whose size changes from state to state, such as bigha, biswa or ground, are deliberately left out, because guessing a regional value could give you a wrong figure on a costly transaction.

How to use the Land Area Converter

  1. Type the figure from your document into the Land area field, using plain digits without commas.
  2. Choose the unit the figure is written in from the From unit list, for example Gunthas (1/40 acre).
  3. Choose the unit you want from the To unit list, such as Square feet or Hectares.
  4. Press Calculate to see the converted area, followed by the name of the unit you chose.
  5. Use Copy result to paste the number into a note or message, or Reset to start again.

Formula used

Converted area = input × source square-metre factor / destination square-metre factor.

Examples

Guntha to square feet

Input: Land area: 1, From unit: Gunthas (1/40 acre), To unit: Square feet

Result: 1,089 Square feet One guntha is one fortieth of an acre, which is exactly 1,089 square feet.

Acres to gunthas

Input: Land area: 2.5, From unit: Acres, To unit: Gunthas (1/40 acre)

Result: 100 Gunthas Each acre holds 40 gunthas, so 2.5 acres equals 100 gunthas.

Hectare to acres

Input: Land area: 1, From unit: Hectares, To unit: Acres

Result: 2.4711 Acres A hectare (10,000 sq m) is a little under two and a half acres.

Land Area Converter: frequently asked questions

How many square feet are there in one guntha?

One guntha equals 1,089 square feet, or about 101.17 square metres. The tool treats a guntha as exactly one fortieth of a standard acre, which is the definition used in Maharashtra and Karnataka land records. Forty gunthas therefore make one acre of 43,560 square feet.

Why can't I convert bigha, biswa or ground?

Those units do not have one national size. A bigha in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal or Assam can differ a lot, and even districts within one state may use different values. Rather than guess, the tool supports only units with fixed definitions. Convert a regional unit using the figure confirmed by your local land office or a licensed surveyor.

What is a cent in land measurement?

A cent is one hundredth of an acre, about 435.6 square feet or 40.47 square metres. It is common in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and parts of Karnataka. In this tool, choose Cents (1/100 acre) in the From unit or To unit list and the conversion uses that exact definition.

How many acres are in a hectare?

One hectare is 10,000 square metres, which the converter shows as 2.4711 Acres (rounded to 4 decimal places). Going the other way, one acre is roughly 0.4047 hectare. Government schemes and agricultural statistics in India often quote hectares, so this is a handy check when comparing them with acreage on your own documents.

Is the converted figure legally valid for registration?

The arithmetic is exact for the definitions shown, but it is not a survey or legal measurement. Registration offices rely on the area recorded in official land records and measurement maps. Use the result to understand and compare figures, and confirm anything important with the revenue department or a qualified surveyor.

Can I enter numbers with commas or decimals?

Decimals are fine, so 0.75 or 12.5 work as expected. Leave out commas, spaces and unit symbols, because the field accepts only a plain number; otherwise you see the message 'Land area must be a plain number, without commas or currency symbols.' Negative values are rejected, since land area cannot be below zero. The result itself is shown with Indian digit grouping, such as 1,08,900 Square feet. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
